(Genesis 3:19 MSG) “You started out as dirt, you’ll end up dirt.”
(Mark 16:15 NCV) “Jesus said to His followers, ‘Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.’”
(Luke 19:1-10 NIV) “Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.”
(Luke 19:2 NIV) “A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy."
(Luke 19:3 NIV) “He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.”
1. The world is searching for Jesus.
(Matthew 19:13-15 NCV) “Then the people brought their little children to Jesus so he could put his hands on them and pray for them. His followers told them to stop, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people who are like these children.”
✓ When we lose our why we lose our way.
✓ We are called to be a funnel not a filter.
(Luke 19:4 NIV) “So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.”
(Luke 19:5 NIV) “When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
2. Jesus leaned in relationally to those He disagreed with theologically.
(Luke 19:6-7 NIV) “So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, ‘He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.’”
✓ You may ruin your reputation, helping someone find salvation.
✓ Self-righteous people will always be critical of grace.
(Luke 19:8 NIV) “But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’”
(Luke 19:9-10 NIV) “Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.’”
3. Jesus was not passively wandering, He was intentionally serving and searching.
(Mark 16:15 NCV) “Jesus said to his followers, “Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.”
Seek: searching in order to find.
Save: to rescue from danger or destruction. To make well, healed, or restored.
(Philippians 2:5-8 NIV) “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
