Who is Church Really For?

Asking For A Friend
Josh Canizaro
September 22, 2019
“I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it.” Matthew 16:18 NIV/KJV
Church: ekklesia — a movement of people.
Church: A movement of people focused on fulfilling the final words of Jesus.
“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”” Matthew 28:16-20 NIV
Evangelizing — “Make disciples of all nations.”
Pastoring — “Baptizing them.” Helping them leave their past.
Discipling — “Teaching them to obey.”
Sending — “Therefore go” to them.
Worship Services for “evangelizing” all people.
Small Groups for “pastoring” all people.
Next Steps for “discipling” all people.
Serve Teams for “going” to all people.
1. One hour of evangelism.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 NIV
2. One hour of pastoral ministry.
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,” Ephesians 4:11-12 NKJV
“He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 NIV
3. One hour of taking steps to become a disciple.
“And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.” Acts 11:26 NASB
“If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1 NLT
4. One hour of serving to make a difference.
“Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant... just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”” Matthew 20:25-26, 28 NIV
Who is Church really for? Church is for ALL people.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 NIV
“Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But who can ask them to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells him?” Romans 10:13-14 LB
